Volunteers of both sexes may be defined by their motivation to commit themselves to a humanitarian project, or more generally to a “civic action”. The aim is to offer one's services to people in need via an association.
A decree published on 30th January 1995, defines international volunteering in general terms.
The emphasis is placed on criteria that are essential for any engagement with Handicap International's Emergency Response Department :
- Age : volunteers must have attained their majority, which is always the case for our volunteers. The average age at present is 34.
- Motivation : a totally disinterested commitment and the desire to be part of a just cause.
- Professional competence : a desire to contribute their know-how and expertise to a specific project and thus bring added-value to existing local competence.
