The actions carried out in response to the tsunami now form part of long-term development programs based on partnerships and specific understanding of the different contexts.
In Indonesia: more regions in the province of Banda Aceh have been made accessible thanks to the peace agreement signed between the government and the GAM. These regions will benefit from Handicap International's dual ‘post-tsunami' and ‘post-conflict' approach. On a national level Handicap International will help disabled people's organizations which are united in a federation, to defend their rights. Indonesia's one and only national training school for orthoprosthesists will receive advice on the content of its training program as well as the techniques used.
In Sri Lanka: along with the healthcare activities already underway (orthotics and prosthetics, training, rehabilitation), resource centers will be opened in the four districts where Handicap International operates, to help increase access to information and services for disabled people and their families
In India, the Andaman and Nicobar islands: continued support is being given to the Indian organization Vidya Sagar and expansion into the Tamil Nadu region may be possible in the future.
In the Maldives: whilst advising the Ministry of Social Affairs on the creation of a national policy on disability Handicap International will also provide support for local organizations working in the field of disability (Community Based Rehabilitation, specialised structures for disabled people).
