Our Expertise

What are Handicap International’s principles?

Handicap International's deployment follows a very simple mission statement:
- identify needs in our field of activity,
- paying special attention to disabled people,
- in close collaboration with local authorities and relevant organizations,
- to provide appropriate, long-term solutions,
- without acting as a substitute for local structures which should in fact be reinforced,
- and without duplicating the work of other initiatives

Handicap International took action to help local authorities and organizations fulfil their mandate whilst limiting the period of direct action to a strict minimum and creating links between local stakeholders and international aid organizations.

It is inconceivable for HI to choose between victims or the vulnerable. Once the emergency phase was over Handicap International was able to help all disabled people in the regions affected by the tsunami, and not just the direct victims of the disaster.  This has been even more the case since our development activities were launched.
