How was the organisation able to help affected countries?

Handicap International was already present in Sri Lanka, running a physical rehabilitation center. HI was therefore able to act during the first few hours following the disaster by mobilizing its teams and network of local partners. In Indonesia, the worst-hit country, Handicap International launched a needs assessment mission in the first few days of January 2006 and this was immediately followed by an assistance mission. In India where HI has been active for years, the populations of the Andaman and Nicobar islands were helped by one of Handicap International's Indian partner organizations. Finally in the Maldives an exploratory mission took place followed by a long-term support mission.
