What does living with disabilities mean?

Handicap International defines “living with disabilities” as a reduction in a person's activity and capacity to fully participate in life in society (with family and friends, in the community and in society in general.) This comes about due to a combination of:

- organ and bodily function impairment or a health problem which causes a temporary or permanent disability

- environment (being tolerated or rejected, having equal opportunities or suffering from discrimination, the accessibility or non-accessibility of accommodation, if quality services are available for all etc.)

The fight to help people living with disabilities participate in all aspects of community life must be based on the recognition of the dignity and equal rights for all human beings.
