More than 1,100 km˛ of land has been decontaminated since 1999 with the destruction of 4 million landmines, nearly one million anti-vehicle mines and several millions of unexploded explosive ordnance. For 2003-2004 mine-clearance activities were carried out in 65 countries and 7 regions; this included humanitarian mine-clearance operations to protect civilians in 36 countries.
Between 1999 and 2003, some 22.9 million people benefited from awareness campaigns concerning the danger of landmines and unexploded ordnance.
The number of antipersonnel mines still stockpiled in the arsenals of 67 countries is estimated at 200 million. 180 – 185 million are held by non-signatory countries: China (110 million), Russia (50 million), United States (10.4 million), Pakistan (6 million) and India (4-5 million).
Around four million stockpiled landmines have been destroyed bringing the total to 62 million in recent years.
Total funding for anti-mine action reached 339 million dollars in 2003. France with its contribution of 2.5 million dollars is placed 17th out of 24 donor countries. The United States remains the biggest contributor with 80.4 million dollars, followed by the European Commission (64.5 million dollars).
Launched by Handicap International in 1995 the Shoe Pyramids organzsed in numerous towns across France and Europe, have quickly become the most important annual event for those campaigning against antipersonnel landmines and, since 2004, against cluster bombs.
Every year hundreds of thousands of people add their shoes to the pile and sign the petition to demonstrate their support for mine victims and to bring the issue to the attention of governments.
