Target: President Barack Obama

Handicap International needs your help to ensure that President Obama submits the Mine Ban Treaty to the Senate now.

More than ninety percent of landmine victims are civilians. With landmines impacting communities in more than 80 countries and territories, the danger is very real.

The U.S. has been planning on joining the treaty since its creation in 1997, but President Bush reversed the U.S. policy stance in 2004. The Obama administration finally announced in December 2009 that the U.S. had initiated a comprehensive review of its landmine policy. However, an announcement still has not been made as to the outcome of this review.

The Petition

President Obama: Abandon the Bush-era policy. Get back on track and fulfill the promise the U.S. made to the international community 15 years ago. Submit the treaty to the Senate for ratification now!

Please email me back and let me know what I specifically can do here in North Carolina where I live, to help in this effort of giving the people of Laos their country back, after more than 50 years of the devastation and mess that America as a nation left for them to deal with and clean up themselves. My wife is Laotian, so, I feel a personal obligation to help fix the mess my country left in her country. My wife left Laos when she was just three years old, back in 1979. – Dan

I am in college in Erie, PA and my Global Health class is trying to promote awareness and raise funds for Handicap International. We separated into groups so we can come up with different ways of fundraising. My group is working with a veterans home called Soldiers and Sailors where we are donating items to their home and the state will give us funds in exchange for the items. The funds will then go to Handicap International. This is a great way to raise awareness on my campus among the faculty, staff, and students.
