Our Work in Kenya

1992: Handicap International provides emergency food and sanitary aid in Garissa (North-Eastern province), following the famine and civil war in Somalia.

1992-1996: The project moves on to a development phase, focusing on improving surgical care for refugees and people with tuberculosis in Garissa hospital, and by supporting a primary healthcare system in the surrounding communities.

1994: Following inter-ethnic troubles, an emergency relief programme was launched in the Trans N'Zoia, Mont Elgon and Bungoma districts in the Kitale administrative area (Rift Valley province).

1996-1999: By providing support to existing structures (local organizations, community health centres and village health committees), the project aimed to improve access to primary healthcare and ensure higher quality prevention programs (mother and child protection, water quality, AIDS).

2000-2004: A project was launched in the Trans N'Zoia district focusing on a comprehensive AIDS control strategy, including preventative, curative and psychosocial-economic aspects. An AIDS control programme for the Somali population also got underway in Garissa, while refugee assistance was maintained and improved.

2002-2004: Disabilities programs were developed in Nairobi, with the focus on coordinating stakeholders and on promoting HIV / AIDS work amongst people with disabilities. During the past three years, we have also offered supported to the region's programs in terms of fundraising and logistics.
