Portrait of Thwe, a Victim of Cyclone Nargis

December 09 2008. Burma
(c) DR

Thwe* is an 8 year old boy who lives in a rural area of Bogale. Before the hurricane he lived with his parents, brother and sister. Thwe remembers the fear he felt as the storm ravaged his family's land as the water levels rose higher and higher in the rice fields. He tried to flee and climbed a coconut tree. Violent gusts of wind caused another coconut tree to fall on the tree Thwe was in, and the little boy broke his leg in a resulting fall.

When he returned to his village, he discovered that his house had been completely destroyed and that both his parents had disappeared. Aid teams  treated Thwe's leg and all three children were cared for.

When the team members and Rehabilitation Center in Bogale met with Thwe, he underwent physical rehabilitation sessions and recieved crutches to heal properly and regain mobilization. Thwe's fracture is now in final stages of healing. The service Livelohood from TMLI (The Leprosy Mission International) has also agreed to provide continuing accommodation. Thwe's living conditions, as well as his siblings', will soon be returning to relative normalcy.

However, because of this accident and the loss of his parents, Thwe has undergone serious psychological injury as well.  The team believes that a TLMI psychological support team will be necessary in the situation. Their next job is to work with other international NGO's to provide this kind of support to Thwe and his community
