Handicap International not only provides assistance to people with disabilities during emergency situations, such as floods, cyclones and earthquakes. It more generally identifies the difficulties facing disabled persons and tries to find solutions to those problems. In this respect, Handicap International is currently developing training courses to raise the awareness of other NGOs and the population at large to the problems of disability and accessibility. Kabir Hossain from the Bangladeshi program explains the main aim of this training.

What does the “Disability Awareness and Accessibility Issues” training consist of?

The “Disability Awareness and Accessibility Issues” training is a highly practical two-day training course. It consists primarily of practical demonstrations. We work with our partners to help them identify disabilities and major accessibility problems. It's a way of preparing our partners to deal with problems that people with disabilities face in particular situations, such as flooding.

Who is the training targeted at?

This practical training course is targeted at our partners - other NGOs. The people concerned are small business owners, project managers and engineers. Our work mainly consists of showing these professionals pictures in order to raise their awareness. One of the goals is to encourage them to think about the issue of “helping people with disabilities access work”. They can therefore develop appropriate machinery and work on development activities to facilitate the lives of people who are directly concerned by disability and accessibility issues.

How have the lives of people affected by the floods changed?

The training course helps participants identify disability and accessibility problems, helping them provide more appropriate solutions to the needs of the population. Thanks to the development of machinery and other development activities, the population feels safer and more secure within a particular environment.
This training also reveals other qualities and the population is very interested in what is being done to help them. The population sees this initiative in a very positive light.
