The Handicap International team in Kabul organized a three-day workshop for twenty volunteers, coordinated by the project manager, Dr Amini.
Held in Kabul, the workshop was primarily attended by women. The subjects under discussion were disability, its causes and prevention, as well as the barriers facing people with disabilities in Afghanistan. They also addressed the issues of inclusive education* and the rights of people with disabilities. This event was vital to improving people's basic knowledge of disability. Many people number a person with disabilities among their family and friends and know the problems encountered in finding support and making the lives of people with disabilities easier by offering them an adapted environment. Most of the time, mothers feel guilty for having given birth to children with disabilities. Among the twenty participants, five have already received training in organizing information campaigns on disability and are in a position to help the most vulnerable women and people with disabilities. Until the end of December 2009, their mission consists of going from door to door in the poor neighbourhoods of Kabul in order to refer people with disabilities to appropriate services and help them register in centres adapted to their needs.
*Project designed to promote the inclusion of children with disabilities within the mainstream school system.
